Generally there are two different ways to keep your teeth generally white:
Naturally & by using Whitening Products
A few natural things you can do on a day to day basis to avoid general staining;
Not smoking.
Avoid drinking dark coloured liquids- such as wine, coke and coffee. And if you’re like me & can’t avoid an occasional drink of Pepsi Max, then use a straw. Drinking from a straw will lessen the drink’s staining direct impact
Avoid eating dark coloured foods; eg. Colourful (Dark) curries, or berries
Ensure you’re brushing twice a day! While especially paying more attention to detail in your brushing at night before bed. You wouldn’t want to give plaque a chance to stay on your teeth for 8 hours of the night, yikes!
People would not think this, but flossing can help. Discolouration of your enamel can occur between your teeth, especially if plaque is left on the tooth’s enamel for some time. You may find that your composite fillings can change colour over time as well, similar to and by the effects a natural tooth would. Make sure you’re flossing once a day, preferably at night, just after brushing your teeth
If you find that following the above general rules, don’t seem to appeal to you, or you find that giving up some habits would be difficult.
Then maybe you need the aid of whitening products.
There are two different products on the market for whitening teeth. You can use a simple whitening toothpaste within your daily brushing and flossing regime, or you can visit your local dentist to have in chair whitening, or simply collect a take home whitening kit, for application at home. I would strongly advise against buying any grocery store/pharmacy whitening kits, as these kits include trays that are not custom made to fit your mouth and allowing the whitening product to damage and cause pain to your gums. It is also beneficial using a custom made tray as it is adapted to the enamel surface of the tooth, the whitening liquid will touch the tooth surface; generic trays may sit further out away from your teeth, not allowing whitening gels to work to their full potential. Your whitening gels will last longer using a custom fit tray, as you are not required to use the as much as generic trays require. Saving you some pocket money 🙂
Here at SFDC, we offer take home whitening kits. These kits comprise of two custom made whitening trays, and whitening application material.
Our trays are made by the laboratory on models of your teeth, therefore allowing the trays to be cut to the exact shape, to ensure your gumline is left out of the tray. It is very important to use whitening trays similar to those below on the left NOT the right.
